Beyond the Office: A Conversation on Transitioning into Retirement

Retirement is one of life’s biggest transitions. After decades of hard work and dedication, this milestone can conjure a spectrum of emotions from exhilaration to dismay. To help our clients better prepare for and embrace this new chapter of life, JNBA Financial Advisors brought together a few recent retirees and Amy Mullen, president of Money Quotient and an expert on navigating the transition to retirement.

During the panel discussion on April 16, hosted at the Westin Galleria in Edina and moderated by Minnesota media veteran Kim Insley, we heard personal experiences accompanied by new learnings and unexpected aspects of the transition to retirement. Here are a few key takeaways from the event, “Beyond the Office: A Conversation on Transitioning into Retirement.”

TALK WITH OTHERS ABOUT RETIREMENT

It’s important to think about how you will transition and spend time in retirement. What is your vision of life in retirement? You might benefit from the learnings and experiences of others. Consider sharing your thoughts with loved ones, friends, and others who have recently entered or will also soon enter retirement. A meaningful discussion can take place without needing to share private financial information.

BE FLEXIBLE

Things may not go as planned! While you can have a plan and do everything to prepare, life can throw curveballs and you may face challenges you did not anticipate. This makes it even more important to create a flexible plan that can adjust to various changes including goals and timeline.

COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR PARTNER

Communicate with your spouse or partner about your vision and goals for retirement. Your perspectives may differ, and that is normal. Ensure you incorporate ways for both of you to experience your idea of retirement as individuals and a couple.

HAVE A GROWTH MINDSET

The transition to retirement can be hard. After decades of working, people can feel like they have lost their identity when they no longer have a career with which to associate. However, there are many rewarding aspects to this chapter of life! Be optimistic and focus on having a “growth” mindset that is open to new experiences and learning new things.
